I remember it like it was yesterday

I was in the shower when I admitted it to myself for the first time

Your name in the same sentence

As if you were the subject

And I the object

As if I would be ok

If you were to blame

That was the first and last time I was honest with myself for so long

I remember it like it was yesterday

I was at work when I learned you took a breath for the last time

We hadn’t spoken in years

I didn’t know of the pain you felt

You never knew how I felt for you

You never would

What could be different if you had?

I can hardly find the words to tell our story

My beginning

Your ending

The words I wish only you to hear

I’ll settle for the world

And tell you in some other one

You, my beautiful truth

I met myself when I met you

My never, my forever

You haunt me

M.A.F. poetry me mine
